TCM Therapy Benefits Survival in Patients with Advanced Breast Cancer

Results from a study demonstrate the benefits of Traditional
Chinese Medicine therapy in improving survival in patients with advanced breast cancer. The study, conducted in Taiwan, examined the combination use of herbal formulas/individual herbs, together with Chemotherapy or surgical intervention or both.
Out of 729 women with advanced breast cancer, 115 women received Chinese herbal for 3-6 months. 95% underwent chemotherapy and 59% underwent surgical intervention.
Patients who received combination therapy with plants experienced 47% decrease in mortality at 3 years (only 28% of women who received combination therapy had not survived, compared with 40% of women who received only western treatment). With longer use of Chinese herbs, % survival further increased.

The most effective herbs were Huang Qi (Astragalus membranaceus), Bai Hua She She Cao (Oldenlandia diffusa), Bai Zhi Lian - with these herbs, survival rates were even higher (up 88%). For the first two herbs, multiple studies in the past have proven efficacy in slowing cancer cell growth.
