A study from India compared the inhibitory effect of 6-shogaol, the pungent component in Ginger root (yes, the one we have at the supermarket) to Taxol, a known chemo, on Breast Cancer cells, as well as Breast Cancer Stem cells (CSCs). Results showed that 6-shogaol was more potent than Taxol and in addition inhibited the stem cells, which pose a serious obstacle to cancer therapy as they can be responsible for poor prognosis and tumor relapse. Furthermore, 6-shogal was not toxic to non-cancerous cells, even at high doses. Previously, Turmeric and Green Tea have been shown to be efficacious against certain types of cancer cells.
